Finding a linux to settle down and grow old with
 

Howdy! I'm shopping for linux, and thought I'd see if anyone here has had any interesting experiences with linux that meet some of the criteria i was looking for in a distro :)



I've tried Ubuntu 11.10, Fedora 15 & 16, Ubuntu Studio, and Puredyne. I might end up settling for Ubuntu Studio, but I'm not sure.



The main things I'm looking for in a distro is:

1. Alsa setup as the default audio kernel thingy, instead of Pulseaudio or anything like that

2. Simple Graphical interface, which is what cut Ubuntu and Fedora out of the picture

3. Extra multimedia apps would be cool



Anybody know of any distros that might be a good match for me? I know it is very possible to setup alsa with any distro, but I really would rather have it be default on the OS. I've been looking at this list, so I may try a few more from here: http://distrowatch.com/search.php?os...&status=Active

PS. For anyone looking for the perfect OS for their netbook, that is not afraid of digging around in linux to get things to work, Fedora 16 is quite amazing on my netbook, great interface and very fast

Also when I say simple graphical interface, I just mean low overhead. I love the interfaces on Ubuntu and Fedora, just don't need it for this particular pc :)

I would suggest Slackware, using either Fluxbox or XFCE interface (both are included, along KDE and several others--select the default at time of install and change it on the fly with the xwmconfig command).

Thanks for the tip on Fedora 16 on the netbook. I have been casting about for something with which to replace Ubuntu.

I'd suggest trying
Salix (Slackware with easier installation and configuration, and more software): available with Xfce, LXDE, or Fluxbox
Mint: LXDE version
Lubuntu (LXDE)
Vector Light (Icewm)

LXDE is lighter than Xfce and has more features than Fluxbox, but it's less easy to configure than either.

I managed to get Slackware installed just fine alongside a small partition of windows xp, and I am really enjoying it so far. Alsa is setup just right I think, and I don't think there is any mixing software between Alsa and my sound card!

Though I did learn a lot about my sound card, and it turns out it can't support a rate over 44,100 Hz, which is a bummer, but also good to know.. It is also only capable of 16 bit audio, but it is a fairly old sound card.

Now that you've installed Slackware, you should read this.

Most commodity PC sound cards are far from pro quality, but if you've got the $ it's easy enough to upgrade..
