Fedora Core 3 Up and working, but.....
 
Hi

I installed Fedora Core 3 on a Pentium III 560Mhz with 392 MB ram and a 20 Gb hdd. And ive got everything to work, havent tried smtp as I dont need it. HTTP works, DHCP works after pleading with it on my knees and editing a dhcpd.conf ;) and samba works.

The only reason why i thought of dabbling with Linux is because I love hosting LANS at my house and stuff, but people always need a patch or a loader or some piece of software so I decided to make a File server that could assign ip's (DHCP) and store files needed for a lan(SAMBA). All in one place.

I was told reliably that for what I wanted to achieve Fedora Core 3 would help me meet my objectives. However keeping an open mind im wondering is there nothing better that would 'just' cater for my needs exactly.

- A server that assigns ip address and dns etc,etc when a computer connects to the network
- A server that holds files and folders needed by users/lanners at lan events

Thats primarily all i need.

Please could some LQ users advise me for what distro might be better suited to my needs.

What also made me think of change is that browsing the network is very slow. I have a 100 base network all round, Cnet Switch and all NIC's are 100 base. ie: Things always take a while to open. Also ive set read/write access to a share on the server however copying to the server from a desktop pc is denied although no firewall is enabled and no SElinux policies are enforced so im thinking, try something else that might be better.

Any help would be appreciated.

Well you could always get a router or switch with DHCP onboard and use the spare PC as a server with WinXP, might make life simpler if that is the only reason you are using linux

What im going to do is try every single Linux distro i can get my hands on. Im going to a Linux Convention tomorrow where there is what is called a "Freedom Toaster" where people can bring empty cd's and write quite a few distro's, all the latest.
