Fast "not so hard" distro?
Hello. I have been using Linux for some months now, currently with Kubuntu 6.10 and somewhat happy with it. However, I'd like to know about fast distros which are at least "not so hard" to start with; I mean, just let me install it, then boot and have a graphical log in to KDE, GNOME or any other.
Why a fast distro? No, I don't have an old computer (Pentium 4 1.7GHz, 1GB of RAM). It's just that I hate bloat and want everything to run as swiftly as possible. Thought about Arch Linux. i586 (I think) optimized, yes very fast (they say), but still a bit advanced to me. Gentoo? No, thanks, I wouldn't have the patience. Slackware also seems a bit too far away from me, so to speak. Xubuntu? No, just Ubuntu with another skin. Suggestions? :D Sorry for the silly question! |

Why not try out Zenwalk?
* Modern (latest stable software) * Fast (optimized for performance capabilities) * Rational (one mainstream application for each task) * Complete (full development/desktop/multimedia environment) * Evolutionary (simple network package management tool - netpkg) It comes with xfce4 desktop also. |

the new 0.8 (voodoo) makes the install quite easy, plenty of the 0.7.x problems seem to be gone. after the base-install you're logged into console, from there pacman is your new best friend. important: read the forums and the wiki! |
