Extendible USB distribution

Hi,

Please I need an advise: I want a Linux distribution on USB (bootable) and easy to extend, I mean to add new applications, the ability to make the permanent changes of
a configuration files and similar. Roughly: the distribution should work more or less as a common installation on a hard disk.

Any suggestions?

You should be able to install almost any recent distribution on USB like you would do it with an internal harddisk.

Yes I guess you right. But I was thinking there is something ready to use with no additional homeworks. You know PnP.
I forgot most important features: the very recent kernel and a good support for drivers. The latter is in fact most important
to me. A range of computers I may run this system is from boxes to notebooks or netbooks. Good support for wifi cards.
A nice set of system tools. A lightweighted desktop (no KDE, no Gnome).
