Edit User Command Path

Could someone please tell me how to edit the shell command path for a user and the root user in SuSE 8.1? I have recently complied several programs and would simply like to type in commands rather then the directory and the command.

Any information would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

either edit their /home/user/.bashrc file or edit the global /etc/profile

a more general solution would be to place the new programs in a standard location (such as /usr/local/bin) which is commonly part of the command path. this will help to keep things a little more orderly (and from getting lost)
