Easy to Install distro?
 

I was looking forward to install Gentoo this weekend. When it was time to reboot, I was waiting for Gentoo to boot, from my hard drive this time! I was met with a mess of unintelligble symbols on the screen, and decided I need an easy to install distribution.

I would prefer not to edit that many config files. Also, the distro needs to be freely available online. A torrent would be preferred. IF the distro has a good package management system, that is even better.

In the past, I have tried Fedora Core 2 and 3, and I was not satisfied with the results. I found the system slow and unstable, and had a number of frustrating bugs. It was the only distro that has actually worked for me, but it was not near enough. I tried Slackware, but it was too confusing.

Can anyone help me? I don't want to have to go back to Windows XP again. Thanks for all replies.

If you want to try something a little advanced you could try Arch Linux, you'll need to edit a couple of config files but the instructions lay it out very clearly (albeit so does Gentoo's manual) and it has awesome package management.

Or if you want soemthing very basic then have a look at SuSE.

Suse or Mandrake may fit your bill, but the slowness may be your PC.

Arch looks pretty cool, I'll give it a shot. Thanks for the replies.

I found Arch to be much more confusing/frustrating than Slackware, but if it fits you then more power to you.

If it doesn't work out, I'd look at Ubuntu.
