Lightbulb

Use SUSE 10.1 , which is free to download from site opensuse.org
It will automatically mount ur old WinXP partitions and show them as a link , Also make the GRUB (boot loader) properly configured.

I think it might be a good idea switch distros for a reason like this. It seems like it would make more sense to figure out what's wrong with your ubuntu setup. I don't see any other distro being significantly different.

If this is your ubuntu thread, I posted a guess at a solution over there, since it seems more relevant information to the problem. Let me know if it's some other issue and I can try to take a look.

Yeah any distro will do what you want,

you would be better off trying a few and see which 1's you like, otherwise there is the Linux Distribution chooser: http://www.zegeniestudios.net/ldc/

as for me I like PCLinuxOS it is fast, Lightweight and has everything you need

http://www.pclinuxos.com/page.php?7

also Mandriva, Kubuntu, SUSE and Mephis might be options for you.

Kubuntu

Mandriva
http://frontal2.mandriva.com/en/downloads/mirrors

OPENSUSE
http://www.opensuse.org/Download

Mephis
http://www.mepis.org/

as for Installation I would highly reccomend using a second HDD for your Linux system, Saves a whole lot of head aches

hope this helps,

Jake
