curious. how often do you change distro?
 

It seems that new releases of distros (e.g. from magazines) are becoming more widely available as well as being easier to upgrade/install. I like the idea of staying faithful to a distro with the occasional upgrade but often can't resist a shiny new one on the cover of a magazine. I was just curious to see how often people change their distro as I seem to be getting carried away!

I tend to stick with one main distro (with constant uprades coz I can't resist the temptation for the latest packages). All other distros Irun are for testing and educaional purposes.

Never, gave up a few years ago after nothing compared to using Slackware, so I don't even bother any longer, just a waste of my time really.

Other than trying out a few distros at work just out of interest really, I don't change anymore. When I first started I did until I found something I was comfortable with, and then have used Debian ever since. Think most people will be the same - will chop + change when they first start out with Linux or for playing around and seeing what new features are out, but generally sit running one main distro.

I don't see the point anymore in spending so much time setting up a new distro just as I want it if I've already got it how I want it on another distro! Would rather tinker a little with what I've got :)

thanks everyone. i can see the 'waste of time' point entirely (mail settings etc) but at the moment its fun. i have debian at home that i havent tried. if that works out i'll probably leave it for a while and 'tinker'.

Of course, i havent tried slackware yet either or......or......:p

When I feel like playing with a different distro, I go for one with a LiveCD, as nothing, but nothing, will replace my Slackware.

I started with Mandrake a number of years ago, went to slackware almost right away, When Fedora core 1 came out I tried it breifly and went back to slack right away. Have been using slack(again) since just after FC 1 came out. Don't plan on switching anytime soon.

When I was just starting out, it seemed I was trying a new distro every two or three days. Maybe I was!

Now that I've settled on Ubuntu, I keep Mepis on another partition because Mepis was my first real Linux. I keep XP around for iTunes. And I have yet a fourth partition for playing around with new distros in case I get curious again.

Main desktop never Debian rocks.

My laptop is my Linux play toy, about every two months I try something new; sooner if something screws up (Ubuntu just died) time for something new. Maybe OpenSuse or Slackware? Who knows.

So far tried Xandros, Linspire, Mandrake 10.1, Fedora Core 3, PCLInuxOS, Ubuntu, Feather, Puppy, MEPIS, Kubuntu, Kanotix, Knoppix,SUSE 9.1.


<edit> Installed OpenSUSE and it is pretty cool. Still trying to find a few apps that I use on my Debian desktop like Rox-filer, other than that very cool.</edit>

Whenever there is a new release. I moved beyond the tinkering phase and now I actually get somthing done from time to time.
My servers on the other hand, well those are never done are they?
