compiling problem with RH 9

Arg!
Yesterday I switched from RH 7.3 to RH 9. Almost all of the programs I could compile on my RH 7.3 (gcc 2.96) can't be compiled anymore because they use deprecated stuff (even the latest releases).
Do you think I will be able to compile them if I delete gcc 3.2 and install gcc 2.96 ? Must I change the libstdc++ too ? And if I do that, willl the programs that come as binary RPMs still work ?

oh sorry ! I've just seen that gcc 9.96 is installed too ...

Get the latest versions of the programs you want to compile.

That's what I'm doing (I still don't know what the result will be).
But the problem is, for several of them, the latest version is 1 year old ! And I don't feel like coding the parts that don't compile ! (for example http://aria.rednoah.com/ )
Did any of you have the same problem ?

I have both gcc 3.2 and gcc 2.95 installed and I have no problem compiling aria or anything else.
