My exeriences:

Mandrake 8.X - wouldn't install! Never tried 9.X.

RedHat 7.X - good distro, but a few problems. Didn't like the "look & feel"

RH 8 & 9 - similar in stability to RH7, not the best, but it beat Doze. Look & feel stunk!

SuSe 8.X - The distro I'd recommend to non-tech people. More stable than RH. Still didn't like look & feel.

Debian - Royal PITA to install. Great system, but you can run into trouble with unstable. Never got X working on current machine.

Slackware - My current distro. Install isn't as slick as RH/Suse, but it's straightforward, and everything works except sound.

LFS - Very interesting distro. I've never gotten it to work, but I might give it another try after the holiday.

I'll go ahead and post my results here.

Ok..I'll start with Mandrake first.

Mandrake 9.2:

I am currently working on a test PDC with Mandrake 9.2, Samba 3.0.1pre and OpenLDAP 2.1.22.

So far, everything has been working very nice. No complaints so far. I do like the urpmi function that it has. It is a hybrid of apt system from Debian and up2date from RH...piece of cake and you can add all the media types that you want.

So far, the test PDC is running flawlessly. I updated the kernel and I am now testing everything with ACL support, which is an added bonus for me...

Conclusion: I like Mandrake much better at this point. Never really liked RH and dislike it even more since their 'decision'. Mandrake could be a possibility.

Next: Suse 8.2/9.0

What I find intriguing with SuSe is who recently bought it; Novel. Also, not sure if anyone heard that IBM is investing $50million bucks into SuSe/Novell to make SuSe run better on their X series server platforms.
What I find very interesting is that, I would guess that IBM is going to try and make SuSe the distro of choice for their X series servers as well as run IBM DB2 database...this could get very interesting down the road and im very curious about it. Even more curious because we do run IBM X series servers here as well as IBM DB2 as our database...Stay tuned..

For the most part though, I dont like SuSe. Just dont....

Red Hat:

No need for comment. I no longer use it.

FreeBSD 4.8/4.9
OpenBSD 3.3/3.4

Really LOOOOVVVVIIIINNNGGG *BSD right now...very solid, very stable. A breeze to maintain once you have it the way you want. Running a few test servers.

Just thought i'd post here.
