Clock 4 minutes behind actual time on CentOS 6.4

Hello All,

I'm trying to set the clock for New York Eastern time but I'm having an issue with my localtime on CentOS 6.4. I have tried linking both /usr/share/zoneinfo/US/Eastern & /usr/share/zoneinfo/America/New_York to the file "/etc/localtime" but whenever I do a 'date' command it still shows the time as 4 minutes behind. I also edited my /etc/sysconfig/clock file to represent ZONE="America/New_York". When I perform these steps in RHEL 6.4 there is no problem. Is this a bug or am I doing something wrong?

Any Help is appreciated thank you!

Is ntp running? Are there any ntp errors in /var/log/messages?

Welcome to LinuxQuestions.

If it was a timezone problem then typically the hours would be off vs minutes.

As suggested ntp might not be running or configured correctly but you have not provided enough information to determine what is happening? Is this a physical or virtual machine? Is it connected to the internet?

Have you tried manually adjusting time?

I checked the ntpd daemon and it is not running.. Also there are no ntp errors in /var/log/messages. Do I need to set an ntp server? then set the hardware clock to the current system time?

Here's the admin guide. You only need to set up ntp if you want the time to be right.

In addition the ntpd daemon will also keep the hardware clock synced.

I started the ntpd daemon and the clock synced up properly. All I did was start the daemon. Thanks for the help everyone!
