First CentOS 5.2 has been unsupported for many years ( since march 2009 )
Please upgrade to the current, and ONLY supported version, CentOS 5.7 and soon 5.8 .
You have not installed the security updates for the ,almost, past 3 years .
what you have not posted is the needed information
the partition size and the % used
but i am betting you have not emptied out the /tmp folder and the logs in /var/log in over 3 years
please do so .

So you've described two symptoms, but not the problem. Maybe you should read
this .
Then perhaps you should check how many running tasks you have (one of which is top itself) - interesting ???.
