can i get Mandrake to start in console?

Mandrake 8.0 that is, when it boots up it ALWAYS goes to KDE. going to KDE is good because that is what i always use BUT i may want to actually use the console sometime such as if i get another computer with Linux and playing with Linux could be on the new computer instead of the current server computer (only Linux box i have)

seriously how do i get into the console with Mandrake or boot in console?

Edit /etc/inittab and change the default runlevel.

I believe you change runlevel 5 to runlevel 3. Could be wrong.

I don't know about Mandy 8.0, but for 8.1 you change the default runlevel from 5 to 3. Runlevel 6 is the total shutdown trigger. I'm running my 8.1 at runlevel 3, then manually launching startx to get the gui running...

well i'm ditching 8.0 anyway, the thing just cannot connect to the internet now. it COULD connect for 1 session but now it doesn't work. i've reinstalled like 7 times and it just can't use my D-Link ethernet card even when i set the IP manualy to an IP i know works. i'm trying 8.2 so no need to post any more.

yes i did, the thing is set to auto detect card (it DID detect an ethernet card) and i told it to automatically detect IP and do it up on boot (select those little star things) and it just does not work.

*edit*
yes i restart the computer after checking those settings, clicking apply, then ok.

I've had no problems with 8.0 until last night. When installing, it would lock up when it tried to install kvirc. Then it had conflicts installing some packages. Then when I rebooted, postfix was failing to start. Dunno what was goin' on.

Mandrake 8.0 will go to KDE if that's the way you set it up and if you don't tell it to do anything different. You see, you are large and in charge in your Linux world !!

Even if you are in KDE, you can always open a console just by clicking on the icon or selecting one from a menu.
