My PCLinuxOS liveCD (the 2007 version) refuses to run, saying it couldn't mount the loop (or something to that effect) and was dropping me down to a limited shell. The first time that happened was late last year. I tried it with a new copy a few days ago, and had the same problem. This was the second CD-R I've wasted on that. Has anyone else had this problem trying to run PCLOS?
It's possible you have a faulty burn (I know you said this first happened late last year) I recommend you redownload the .iso do a md5sum check to make sure the .iso download isn't corrupt and re-burn at no faster than 4x. Or you can try with MiniMe which is a stripped down PCLinuxOS (only a few basic apps are there, you add the ones you need), but still follow the steps above.
Okay, I'll try burning it again. I'll avoid MiniMe, though, unless it includes ndiswrapper. I run a wireless network and require ndiswrapper for the driver, and if a distro doesn't have it, how would I get online to download it?
By the way, Pclosusers.com has the fastest uploading servers I know. Nowhere else can I download at up to 1600 KB/s.

It didn't work. Same result. I don't see how it could be the computer, because this is a new and different motherboard. Three consecutive failed burns, or three consecutive failed downloads? What are the odds?

I forgot to put in my previous post, use rewritable discs that will stop the creation of permanent coasters!
MiniMe does have ndiswrapper already included.
Finally that is a weird problem you have there!!
Have you tried using the function keys to cycle through the different terminals to see if any contain a clue as to why mounting the loop fails? Perhaps adding
