Buying Linux
 

Hello, fellow geeks and Linux users.

I'm very familiar with Linux, having used it for many years now. I even compiled and ran kernel .001 for fun once. I know what I'm doing with it.

I am now living in a rural area of Ohio. The only available internet services to me are dialup and sattelite, and I refuse to pay the thousand dollar setup fee for sattelite internet. I use dialup.

My wife's laptop has a modem in it. My tower does not. Her laptop is a Windows XP Pro laptop. We use internet connection sharing to give my tower internet access. According to the latest HCL, everything in my tower is Linux compatible.

Here's what I need from you people. I need to know, url's included, where I can buy a version of Linux. Bonus points go to Red Hat 9 linux copies, as that was my favorite version when I stopped using Linux. Extra bonus points go to those of you who can give me links to buy directly from the distro producers.

but Red hat no longer makes or supports red hat desktop. just enterprise ($$$)

I'm aware that RedHat no longer sells or supports 9. I was hoping someone knew of a place I could purchase a copy still for sale.

I do not want Entreprise Linux, nor do I want Fedora Core.

just my view but I would not advise you to go for redhat 9, it was an excellent os but it's dead and then no longer supported, which means that you won't even have security updates. I find it quite dangerous to run it now but after the choice is yours...

I know this will start a distro war, but here goes.

If RH9 isn't a good choice, what would be? I'm a kernel generation behind, so I don't really have much in the way of a clue what I'm missing if I missed anything. All I know is that Fedora Core has so many problems in all versions to date that I don't want to screw with it.

ok without starting a distro war indeed, I would advise to go for debian stable (sarge was released today then it is new & stable :-) ). it does not require a lot of updates (besides security updates from time to time...) and then good for your lack of connection.
Ok some are going to say that it is complicated to install but it's getting easier... now sarge will have a very nice installer... and once it's installed, you can forget it...
It would be my choice in your situation.

Wow, thanks for the list Craig. I believe I will be taking Arnaud's advice and using Debian, and I'll purchase it at one of the places listed in the thread.
