Boot error (GRUB GENTOO)

Hey guys, this is my first linux install. Used Gentoo (2004.2) and followed the handbook provided by gentoo as closely as I could and as much as i could understand. I thought I was doing well, until I attempted to reboot out of the installer/setup and into the real deal. Grub loaded up fine, I chose 2.4.26-gentoo-r9... some stuff happends and then BLAMO!!!!!!!!

"Determining root device...
The root block device is unspecified or not detected.
Please specify a device to boot, or "shell" for a shell..."

So I attempted typing "/dev/hda1" and I get some crazy thing with flashing lights that basically said DONT DO THAT AGAIN!!!!!!

Anyone know what I can do? I know im a noob, but I would really appreciate some help. Thanks.

Can you post your boot line. It should look something like this:

Code:

title Gentoo
kernel (hd0,0)/bzImage-gen-2.6.7test5 root=/dev/hda6

Your partitions may differ though. Also, did you get fstab file changed correctly? I ask because that was what I did wrong, twice.

OK, well I then tried booting as /dev/hda3........ and VOILA
So then I get in, I emerge KDE....
And now I get a fatal error. something about not connecting to X server

Any ideas?

Here is the exact message:
"Fatal server error:
Cannot run in framebuffer mode. Please specify busIDs for all framebuffer devices"

May want to read these:

I think basically, you need to configure X. Remember, Gentoo does not do much automatically for you. It lets you control almost everything.

Hope that helps. Post back if not.
