Best Distro for a USB pen driver?
The title says it all,
Pen Driver size: 2GB. thanks folks. Edit: I know about Slax, DSL and Puppy.. however I'm looking for one which is based on Debian. Edit 2: According to pendrivelinux.com I could get the original ubuntu 7.10 and with some hack fit inside of a pen driver, now I don't want to do that, I want a OS based on Dehian that was designed for a USB pen driver. |
DSL is based on debian.

Try Debian.
Debian net install installs a very basic system, then allows you to install more stuff. http://www.us.debian.org/distrib/netinst#verysmall I tried 3 different sets of pendrivelinux instructions, and none of them successfully booted. (I'm on an intel mac mini) So I used a normal install CD of geubuntu, it recognized my thumb drive, and I partitioned with a swap partition, and it boots just fine and runs great! I did have to run down to the store and buy a new thumbdrive (8 Gb, only $40) though because it didn't fit on my 1 Gb drive. I think it would install successfully on a 2 Gb drive, just boot up and follow the normal installation procedure, choosing your thumbdrive when you get to the disk partitioning part. It really irked me that the installer didn't allow any package selection. That's why I suggested the original: Debian! A good linux distro installer should allow some way of selecting what you want or don't, and total up the hard drive space before starting, but maybe I'm just old fashioned. I would think most of them should fit on 2 Gb if you just don't install everything. |
knoppix, it will fit in 2gb and if you follow the instructions at:
http://www.knoppix.net/wiki/Bootable_USB_Key it works every time. i have used this set of instructions 4 times and it has never failed me. good luck! |
Suppose I want my pen driver to be a HDD replacer, is it possible?
Meaning that I don't need a HDD, I could just use the pen driver |
I'm not really sure what the question is, but the answer is yes.
If your computer is configured to be bootable to the USB drive, then yeah you can install applications, save data files to it, etc. No problemo. as Nike would say: just do it |
