Best distro for a server and low spec?
I'm looking for a distro which has the following.....
Apache, php MYSQL mail server samba and other networking server tools this is to run on a PC with 64mb ram and an amd 500mhz processor, which distro would be best for this? it would be nice if it had a smal GUI |
Why would you need a gui? You don't need gui at all for a server. Besides taking resources, it's also a security risk. That's the beauty of Linux and servers... no-gui.
Check out *BSD if you want security, stability and low-resource requirements. Slackware would be a nice Linux distribution for it though, if you really want Linux :) |
The GUI isnt highly important, but it would be nice if there was one there. I'm no expert with linux, but I'm not a beginner either, so having the GUI would be good if I was having problems doing something in text mode.
I've got feather and damnsmalllinux, they are both great little distros, but last time I tried a small distro it had a lot of things missing which prevented me from installing other software. I've got slackware 9, I'll give that a go, and if all works out I'll install slackware 10 |
I'd also throw in a vote for Slackware - I'm currently running 10.1 with Apache, ProFTPD, Qmail, MySQL, etc and it runs great - when I did the install I opted not to have Gnome or KDE as I manage everything via the terminal. This allowed me to just use the first disk as the second is for the Desktops, etc.

I would go for CentOS 4 without any X Server. I think it runs well on my old Compaq Deskpro 300Mhz (even with GNOME). The security update times are good and I haven't found any RHEL 4 package that doesn't work with it. You also have Apache, DNS, DHCP, Samba, SQL software in as standard.
