Server Distros
 

I am setting up a webserver for a non-profit group .. bandwidth & hardware are donated by I don't know who. Long story short, someone offered my time to admin it and I don't want to let anyone down.

Services will be ftp, dns, mysql, php, http, proxy, ssh, telnet (maybe not since ssh serves the same function) & vnc/tightvnc

Anyway, I'm looking for a good distro that either has automatic updateing or a command such as "update world". Seeing as I'm doing this for free I don't want to spend more than an hour or two a week on it.


Having never setup a co-located server before I'm a little worried.
ASPLinux looks pretty solid.
ClarkConnect 1.2 will be out soon and also looks fairly solid.
E-Smith came recommended to me. 5.5 has security issues (can be patched). 5.6 is suppose to be near release.
Gentoo not aimed at the server end. Having it compiled for the hardware should make it as efficient as possible. I believe it has an "update world" command. Secure for server use? Worth the effort?
Trustix leaves me wondering about the quality, but is the only distro that stats it has autoupdate.
TurboLinux probably the most reliable of the distros and soon to be based on UnitedLinux. I don't think the downloadable version has automatic updating.


To make it short, I'm looking for a distro that will take the least ammount of work to setup, administer and keep up to date. Since I've never setup linux as a server (my job is to maintain windows desktops and experiment with new technology) I would also like it not to be overly complicated.


I know SuSE, SCO & TurboLinux will all be releasing UnitedLinux based OSes in December. I would love to have a server based on standards, but I must get this live by the second week of December.

Redhat Linux has a solid distro edition called "Advanced Server" which quite rock solid, why not evaluate as well?

I don't think redhat allows downloads for it's server distro. I can't justify paying $120 for something that I'm only going to be using as a tool for chairty work.

Well, I am sorry to hear that. Anyhow if anyhow friends or relative may have, can use their copy, I am doubt about whether there is a need to license?
