Since you didn't specify what your search terms where we can't help with that. If you want to pursue this open up a thread in the "LQ Suggestions & Feedback" forum.

Short answer: probably not. Long answer: since I know zilch about this all... Searching for "CNC" turns up the forum at
www.cnczone.com. Searching for "Bridgeport Mill" turns up Wikipedia (seems to be a "turret mill"). Searching for "Artsoft Mach3 CNC" finds the site. It is an application that generates "G-code" or "RS-274D" for "numerically controlled machines". Searching for "G-code" turns up stuff like
http://jelinux.pico-systems.com/gcode.html which gives an indication of what the code looks like and
http://www.extrapic.com/mill/mill.html which shows how to generate G-code from an SVG image using Perl. Searching for "sourceforge +RS-274D" turns up the "Enhanced Machine Controller (EMC) Project"
http://wiki.linuxcnc.org/cgi-bin/emcinfo.pl/ which refers to a distro called "CoolCNC" which is "a puppybased linuxdistribution that can reproduce itself, runs on most x86 hardware and has realtimecapabilities utilizing rtai".

Since you didn't specify any errors we shouldn't comment on that.

GNU/Linux does stress HW much more but likely the mobo already was bad.

Basically GNU/Linux is a "reap what you sow" thing. If you don't invest you are not granted any ROI.
