A SuSE 9.1 question.

I am just wondering if anybody knows if you can do a minimal install with just the first two install CDs?... do you need all five? (trying to get grasp on how long the install will take)

And lastly, after I buy the box set, how many computers can I install it on? licence wise that is.

According to one review, a standard install of 9.1 professional requires all 5 CDs and takes about 30 minutes. Installing with the DVDs probably takes less time.

My understanding is that personal use of SuSE Linux isn't restricted to a single PC - you can install it on as many machines as you want.

Cool!

Ok just wondering,
Could I install a very basic base install off CD1 then add the rest via ftp?

to my knowledge suse aren't releasing 9.1 on to their website until the 4th of June so you will need to use the CD's..

Ok cool.. that's fine.

I was wondering because I plan on putting it on some school computers (14) for a project. It would be to simulate an office network. I figured it would be much easier to do a quick minimal install on all 14 then have them update/install everything else over my school's stupidly fast internet connection then to sit at each one switching five different CDs per computer.

I might just use SuSE 9.0 for the project and do an ftp install. However, eather way I will be getting 9.1 for my home.

Thanks all.

if your doing a minimal install such as a text-based install you only need the first two CD's. Even a GUI instal youl only needs the first 2 CD's if you dont plan on using all of the apps. I have done two different installs on two machines and they only first two.

Of course it all depends on what software/apps you chose to install. I think you can do an install over a network (havent tried it).

I am patiently waiting to purchase SuSE 9.1 Pro Boxed version with CDs and manuals since I have a SATA drive on RAID that isn’t recognised by earlier versions. Does anyone have any idea when they will start selling the boxed set for SuSE 9.1 Pro?

Where do you live? It is out in Germany and the UK already. They started shipping to the US on the 8th so probably sometime this week.

Suse 9.1 AMD64

FYI:

I advanced ordered a copy of Suse 9.1 Pro for AMD 64. It just came in last week and I installed it via a single DVD and it took about thirty minutes till the kde 3.2 gui was there. Suse is wonderful after an infuriating experience I had with Gentoo.

My system:
Soyo Ultra Dragon 2 mobo
AMD Athlon 2800+
Corsair 256 mb PC3200 DDR400 (x 2)
Seagate 120 mb (eide)
Nvidia 5200 fx graphics card

Cheers to ya'll. Jenn O+>

I live in Malaysia. In the past, I used to pick up the boxed set at PC World in the UK but I don't expect to be in the UK in the next few months. I have also just purchased a new server with SATA Raid and can't install the older SuSE products onto it, hence the reason I am eager to get my hands on the SuSE 9.1 CDs.
