a Distribute for a server and coding

i have a good expirience from Mandrake 10.0 and have there, cahnged from n00b into amateur :p

anyway, my question is this:

which Distribution do you prefer when hosting a server & proggraming?

when i had Mandrake 10.0 the computer was a little too slow (maybe because the speed was 750 mHz)

i am going to buy a separate computer to put up Linux, but i need to know how fast it should be, and which Distribution i should Install.

i would prefer the minimal speed recomennd be as low as it can, cause i don't wan't to spend much money on a computer,.

if you don't like, that i don't want to spend money on Linux, think about Windows. The computer i am (and going to be) using for Windows, is 750 mHz and i didn't spend a penny on it, which means, i would prefer spend money on Linux, than Windows :D

you can get a dedicated gentoo server for $99 ... which isnt bad at all.. and gentoo is really good for coding.. and it will move you from amature to guru... gentoo is the way to go to learn all there is about linux.. realy..

however, on my server (actually 5 servers, but specifially speaking the dns and webserver) i have SuSE 9.2 pro.. and it works like a charm, i have a p3 on the webserver (650mhz) and 4 sparc cpu's on the fire wall.. I have done quite a bit of php and perl coding on all of them w/ very little trouble... course I do alot of server work, so I got all of my eq free, I just ask the companies that I replace their servers if I can have the old stuff, becuase they arent going to use it anymore..... but the gentoo servers really look nice, although i havent actually used one :)

What is the difference between a Dedicated Gentoo and normal Gentoo?

ahh... :) nothing really.. it's.. kind of taken out of context..


it is a dedicated server ( as in .. designed only to be a server, it has a server case and server components and it is rackmount) that runs gentoo, it's not "dedicated gentoo" it's "dedicated server that runs gentoo" thus.. dedicated gentoo server .... sorry for the confusion.....

What is the difference between a computer runned as a Server and a real Server?

is there any difference Setting the either one up?

is it complicater to set up a Server than a Computer or is it just identicle?

uh.. a server is a type of computer, that is set to only work with networking, you can use a pc (personal computer) as a server, but a server has to stay active permanently, and usually it's best for bigger web sites to have a dedicated server, because a pc wont be able to stand up to the regular use and the server use, A dedicated server is just a regular computer, (although when you talk big servers usually they are higher end and alot faster and more optimized) that is set aside to only run the server programs.
