Yast2 and sax2 unreachable in SuSE 9.2

I'm using SuSE 9.2. When I click on YaST2 in a menu, I'm asked for my password; entering the password takes me back to the KDE desktop.
I've been running SUSE 9.2 for a couple of years; the problem with YaST2 started about a month ago.

This is not crucial. As soon as I back my .tex files, I'll load SuSE 10.0.

The password that is required is the administrator (root) password, not the user password.
