Xorg goes black on boot, using Xorg's radeon drivers

I just installed MEPIS 6.5 Beta7 x86-64, I can get the system to run smooth with the VESA drivers but when I set it to the Xorg Radeon drivers it freezes the system when KDM launches. If I try to get a console it will not switch, the only course of action is to hit the reset button. I've had this happen now with Debian etch and MEPIS, and wondering if anyone else had this problem or knows how to fix it. If you need I'll post my xorg.conf or any other info needed. Don't know if it is trying to output to the DVI port, because I only have an anolog monitor.
System is:
ASUS K8VX motherboard
AMD 64 3000+
1 GB RAM
ATI Radeon 9700 Pro
250 GB harddrive
Sound Blaster Audigy2

yeah...
the "radeon" driver hardlocks my computer too. I've got a 9800 pro.
I haven't had problems using "vesa", "ati", or if you want to install the proprietary driver from ati's site "fglrx" should all be okay. The open source "ati" driver is decent.

Yeah The "ati" drivers are the ones that are crashing, never had the problem back about a 7 months ago, I am currently installing openSuse as well so I'll see how it fairs with that. Any other answers would be welcome, because I've seen a lot of posts about this but never any solid answers. Thanks for any help.

hrm it seems that the fglrx drivers were working great until I try to go from X to a terminal and then back to X. My computer completely freezes and nothing but a power for 5" turns it off. So I went back to using "ati" as a driver and it's working okay.

I don't have any fancy settings set for it anymore and it isn't freezing. It's slow...but it isn't freezing. Perhaps you had some of the radeon/ati driver settings away from their default values in your /etc/xorg.conf file?

Man, I hate ATI. This is it for them. They'll never get my business again...

if you'd like to try my xorg.conf I can post it here...maybe it won't freeze for you...

Know this tread is kind of old, but I stepped away for a while, because if not I think I would have thrown the PC out the window. I have Mepis 32 now installed, with the proprietary drivers installed, and all runs well, going to try with Debian Etch or Sid soon. I don't know why, but the opensource drivers crash my system every time it tries to load X, which kind of sucks because I was hoping to try Beryl. Now, since I just got a new PC, I don't feel like changing my 9700 in the old one over to NVidia.
