Xmonad stops working right when xmobar is started on Debian/stable

Hi,
I'm having a real trouble with xmobar.
I set up xmonad on my notebook (running Debian Lenny 5.0.4) about a week ago. Everything worked perfectly with the default settings. But whenever I try to make use of a setting, that involves xmobar, xmonad will partly stop working. Which means, I can't open new windows or change the workspace. However windows i already opened (like a terminal or a firefox session) will continue to accept my input.

A tried a variety of settings that a found on the internet and i had pretty much the same result with all settings.

Of course I did some research and I came across this: http://www.haskell.org/haskellwiki/X...sponds_to_keys

I tried 'cat'ing the pipe, like they advised, but without any success.

Any advice is appreciated, thanks in advance.
