Xfce 4.12. Is there any news as to when it will be released?
We are just a couple of weeks from the scheduled release of Xfce 4.12, but I haven't seen anything about pre-release candidates nor any recent news about 4.12.
Does anyone have any recent news on the subject? Hope there is a built-in menu editor in next release. Thanks. :hattip: |
Hi:
This was the only schedule I could find- http://wiki.xfce.org/releng/4.12/roadmap Looks like March: 2013-03-10 or 1 week later Xfce 4.12 (Final Release) ;) |
Yes, I saw that. There is also a "news" story about it at,
http://news.softpedia.com/news/Xfce-...3-291007.shtml and I just found this: http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?pag...tem&px=MTI4MzA |
XFCE is very nice!
We are not the only ones that think so- http://xfce.10915.n7.nabble.com/Menu...r-td29100.html Found this page by accident- LOL Xfce is developed to be versatile. It is currently supported on Linux, Solaris and BSD, but has been known to run in some shape or form on IRIX, MacOS X, and Windows. http://wiki.xfce.org/faq Didn't know XFCE would run on a Mac OS till I saw it today- |
That first link is very interesting.
Thanks. :hattip: |

Well... Today is the 10th of March 2013.
:) |
Anxious Mate?
LOL- I like new things too. Here's the second preview release for April 14th and 28th- http://www.xfce.org/ But:- Where's today's release? I tend to keep my word when I make an announcement. Wonder what XFCE Development's Team deal is? I looked around on the net for today's release came up empty handed:scratch: |
Found this 'statement':
"This schedule is preliminary and not to be considered final." http://wiki.xfce.org/releng/4.10/roadmap It appears (looking at the page to the link) that they completely wiped todays success off the schedule- I would never do that to my clients w/o notice; but that's just me |
10 March 2013, was the previously announced release date for Xfce 4.12.
If they missed it, no problem. Understandable. OTOH, to not say a word about it is, at best, unprofessional. However, I was just on Distrowatch and noticed "xfdesktop (4.10.2)" has been released. Haven't been able to find much about it except this 5 month old statement, http://xfce.10915.n7.nabble.com/ANNO...d-td10589.html |
Unprofessional; indeed-
I'll keep an eye on the XFCE websites over the next few weeks. Hopefully something good will be along shortly. I've not the skill to build a graphical XFCE Desktop environment and it's clear that by wisdom I shouldn't assume. However; a (Graphics Developer/Engineer) shouldn't need more than 30 days. There are some really high tech applications that could assist a developer in no time flat. (just generalizing here) I'm not an expert at this just an Artist of 10 years plus. I'll elaborate some on my take on this:- As an Artist I design abstract art with GIMP in one day. Other demands (depending on intricate detail and to meet the demands a client requests) a finished piece may take me weeks whether on canvas or in GIMP- Generally an environment is built one layer at a time with multiple effects and adjustments applied. I have spent maybe 3 weeks at the most building a desktop background but never months. Perhaps more re-search on XFCE and how the Linux Graphic Developers orchestrate their projects is worth-wild. |
Xfce is very slow and steady when it comes to development. Even when 4.12 is done, I wouldn't expect too many improvements. Most of their development usually goes into thunar. (Not a bad thing)
I wonder about the future of Xfce. Considering their slow development, can they really emerge onward when they have to move to gtk3? Is it possible to just keep with gtk2? Or will something like RazorQt emerge to become a contender? |

Few pages to check out- http://www.gtk.org/features.php Keeps the Perl Developers busy:- https://metacpan.org/module/Gtk3 Gtk3 for Arch https://www.archlinux.org/packages/extra/i686/gtk3/ Looks like Gentoo and Ubuntu users are already partaking in the joy of Razor Qt http://razor-qt.org/ http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-913958.html http://blog.linux4us.org/2012/02/18/...ut-incomplete/ |
Even though Xfce 4.12 is delayed, they did release 1.6 for Thunar. That alone is a nice upgrade because it adds tab support.
