Xephyr Black Screen

Hello,

So I got a new hard disk and reinstalled my Kubuntu 14.04 on it. For the most part all works but not Xephyr. I have it installed along with the fonts and Xnest, but all I get is a black screen when before I was able load KDM. The command I was using (which still works on the old system) was:

Xephyr :1 -query 127.0.0.1 -screen 1440x900

Nothing I have found online seems to really be helping. Does anyone have any ideas as to what is misconfigured?

At this point I am willing to just copy the config files from the old drive to the new one and be done with it, if I knew where they were all located.

Solution

I finally found what I was doing wrong after comparing my files. You must edit kdm:

==================================

Step 1 - Set the file at: /etc/kde4/kdm/kdmrc

[Xdmcp]
Enable=false

needs to be changed to:

[Xdmcp]
Enable=true

==================================

Step 2 - Then access the file at: /etc/kde4/kdm/Xaccess

#* #any host can get a login window

needs to be:

* #any host can get a login window

==================================

Step 3 - Then in command type:

Xephyr :1 -query 127.0.0.1 -screen 1440x900

==================================

Step 4 - Restart X

Now it comes up at the KDM login screen and I can login as any user.
