X won't start after Ctrl-Alt-Backspace on laptop

I've been using openSuse 10.3 for about 6 months now. I wanted to install Compiz Fusion for window effects, but found out that I needed to update my video card drivers.

In the instructions, it said to press Ctrl-Alt-Backspace to restart X without rebooting. However, it took me out to a command line, asking me to login, etc. At first, I didn't realize what happened, so I shut down. When I booted up again, it booted to the command line and didn't load X.

Then I tried to start X manually. xinit gave the following error:
(EE) No devices detected.

Fatal server error:
no screens found

startx throws the same error.

How should I go about starting X now?

More info

The laptop has an ATI Mobility Radeon chipset. The following line is in /var/log/Xorg.0.log:
(--) PCI:*(1:5:0) ATI Technologies Inc RS300M AGP [Radeon Mobility 9100IGP] rev 0, Mem @ 0xf0000000/27, 0xe8100000/16, I/O @ 0x9000/8

After installing the new drivers, I executed "aticonfig --initial" (without quotes, this was in the instructions) to configure X to use the new drivers.

After it kept booting to the command line, I re-ran that command with the following output:
Found fglrx primary device section
Nothing to do, terminating

Then, I also tried running "X -configure", but it threw the following error:
Number of created screens does not match the number of detected devices.
Configuration failed.

I hope this helps.

fglrx driver problem in xorg.conf

Sounds like the fglrx driver didn't load properly.

Here's what the device section of /etc/X11/xorg.conf looks like on my machine:

Code:
Section "Device"
	Identifier	"Generic Video Card"
	Driver "fglrx"
	BusID "PCI:1:5:0"
	Option "DRI" "true"
	Option "ColorTiling" "on"
	Option "EnablePageFlip"	"true"
	Option "AccelMethod" "EXA"
	Option "XAANoOffscreenPixmaps"
	Option "RenderAccel" "true"
	Option "AGPMode" "x"
	Option "AGPFastWrite" "on"
EndSection
If you are still having problems, try and install the fglrx driver by executing the .run file (rather than installing from rpm (or deb)).
