X crashes when I turn off the monitor

Hi all,

I'm running Centos 6 on an HP Z820 workstation.
Whenever the monitor is turned off, X crashes.
I have disabled all powersaving options and the screensaver, but even if I leave the screen on, it eventually shuts off and X crashes.

If I turn off the screen and then turn it on again, the application windows will still be there (minimised to tiny squares) but X is gone and I need to alt-ctrl-delete to login again.

I'm using the nVidia driver (version 310.32) for my Quadro 4000 card.

kernel 2.6.32-279.22.1.el6.x86_64

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Have you checked the logs?

How come X is gone but you have application windows (regardless in what state)?
Can you reach the other vts (ctrl-alt-1 ...6)?

Thanks for the quick replies!

Maybe it's not X then? The desktop, panel etc. is all gone, the only thing on the screen is the tiny application windows (which can be enlarged). Maybe it's kWin that's crashing?

I can reach the non-graphical terminals.

I'm attaching my Xorg.0.log file for your perusal.

Hm. Didnt find anything in there that would point to a x server issue. Although you have there a repeating error message, that seems to have to do with HDMI.

Code:

[ 84620.812] (EE) config/hal: NewInputDeviceRequest failed (8)
Try this: change to a virtual terminal, turn off the screen, turn it back then switch vback to vt7.

ok, I switched to a text vt, turned off the screen and turned it back on. The screen searched for a connection to the computer and failed, and then went to sleep!

May I add that when I am in the login screen, I can turn the screen on and off and it's fine.

and this is at the end of Xorg.0.log after I tried turning off the screen in a text terminal:
