What is your "default window manager"?

open the .xinitrc (it's empty) and edit it:

$ nano .xinitrc

leave it looking like this:

#!/bin/sh
icewm

save and exit from your editor

$ startx <Enter>

this will make icewm your default wm, i don't understand the rest of your posting.
