Did you save the files as *.doc or did you save them in the native openoffice format? If you saved them in the native openoffice format, then anyone using Microsoft word will not be able to read them. There is plugin which is currently being developed that will enable MS Office to read opendocument formats. I am not sure if there has been a stable release yet.

Microsoft uses proprietary formats but--at least for Word files (.doc), OpenOffice and Abiword do a decent job of saving in .doc format.

Standard formats are going to be one of the big battlegrounds in the next few years--as governments and large instituitons start insisting on standards.

Meanwhile, you are responsible for sending things in a format that you know someone can read.
