Why i can't activate the3D cube?

I have Ubuntu 8.10. Everything works fine. but I can not activate the 3D cube. I have installed : Advanced Desktop Effects Settings, Compiz Fusion Icon and Desktop Effects programs. no error messages so fare. And still I am not able to figure out what I do wrong. Please give some ideas.

What is your graphics hardware? Is 'dri' up and running? You can look in /var/log/Xorg.0.log

Can I solve the problem by using menu commands? I have learned from web that the Ubuntu desktop might look very cool. all therese flames and cubes.

Compiz Fusion Icon is a GUI interface for starting Compiz Fusion, it's useless if Compiz Fusion is not installed. And you need 3D capable graphics, the generic video drivers that come with Linux normally don't give you 3D, you have to install proprietary drivers to get 3D. (Just like in Windows, but in Windows the drivers are usually bundled with the CD that is designed for a specific computer hardware configuration, which is why most times you do not need to chase them down and install separately).
