Why can't remove mate from my debian8.1?

I have installed mate as my desktop, now i feel it is more slower than lxde,
i want to remove it .

apt-get purge mate-desktop-environment
apt-get autoremove
reboot

I found that mate is still in my debian8.1 when to reboot my pc.
How to remove mate from my debian8.1?

There is no need to reboot after installing or removing packages. Just log out and log back in.
