Solved

Somehow, the Brother 3040CN is working. I had to get rid of CUPS and install the Ubuntu lpd and lpr tools, then fire up the daemon. My pfSense firewall gave the network printer a new private IP and that needed to be changed in /etc/printcap. But it works.

Hope this printer lasts for at least 5 years!
