Fluxbox.
I wish Fluxbox was on the poll list because I believe most of the "others" are fluxbox users.

1st. Gnome
2nd Xfce

No real third, I hate KDE, I'd learn terminal first.. . I don't know why, maybe because of its similarity to Windows, or it just doesn't "look" right to me, but I keep Xfce and KDE alongside my Gnome Ubuntu installation so I can switch to them when I feel like it.
