VMWare Guest xorg.conf resolution snafu (default to largest instead of first)

Here's the situation... I have an rhel5 vmware guest that I'd like for X to start @ 800x600 with higher resolution available. From what I've read on the xorg.conf manpage and GDM info the first Mode listed in the Display subsection of the Screen section of xorg.conf should be used.

In my case it is defaulting to the largest mode. Not the behaviour I'm looking for.

xorg.conf:
Code:
Section "ServerLayout"
	Identifier "single head configuration"
	Screen 0 "Screen0" 0 0
	InputDevice "Keyboard0" "CoreKeyboard"
EndSection

Section "InputDevice"
	Identifier "Keyboard0"
	Driver "kbd"
	Option "XkbModel" "pc105"
	Option "XkbLayout" "us"
EndSection

Section "Monitor"
	Identifier "vmware"
	VendorName "VMware, Inc"
	HorizSync 1.0 - 10000.0
	VertRefresh 1.0 - 10000.0
	ModeLine "640x480" 100.0 640 700 800 900 480 500 600 700
	ModeLine "800x600" 100.0 800 900 1000 1100 600 700 800 900
	ModeLine "1024x768" 100.0 1024 1100 1200 1300 768 800 900 1000
	ModeLine "1152x864" 100.0 1152 1200 1300 1400 864 900 1000 1100
	ModeLine "1280x1024" 100.0 1280 1300 1400 1500 1024 1100 1200 1300
	ModeLine "1600x1200" 100.0 1600 1700 1800 1900 1200 1300 1400 1500
EndSection

Section "Device"
	Identifier "VMware SVGA"
	Driver "vmware"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
	Identifier "Screen0"
	Device "VMware SVGA"
	Monitor "vmware"
	DefaultDepth 24
	SubSection "Display"
		Viewport 0 0
		Depth 4
		Modes "640x480"
	EndSubSection
	SubSection "Display"
		Viewport 0 0
		Depth 8
		Modes "800x600" "1024x768" "1280x1024" "1600x1200"
	EndSubSection
	SubSection "Display"
		Viewport 0 0
		Depth 15
		Modes "800x600" "1024x768" "1280x1024" "1600x1200"
	EndSubSection
	SubSection "Display"
		Viewport 0 0
		Depth 16
		Modes "800x600" "1024x768" "1280x1024" "1600x1200"
	EndSubSection
	SubSection "Display"
		Viewport 0 0
		Depth 24
		Modes "800x600" "1024x768" "1280x1024" "1600x1200"
	EndSubSection
EndSection

Section "DRI"
	Mode 0666
EndSection

Note that if I remove the Modelines from the Monitor section then the highest available resolution is 800x600. Also not the behaviour I'm looking for.
