What distro are you using? By accessing the correct repository, you should be able to install a pre-compiled binary using a simple command like 'yum install vlc'.

Redhat 9 : xmms should be installed with the command

1) su
2) rpm -Uvh <package.rpm>

.......
Do not expect to install 'vlc' : Redhat 9 was declared
dead already year 2004.
The current supported version is Redhat Fedora 10.
So you are 10 versions behind today.
....
