Virtual Desktops with individual icons and folders
In KDE (for example) you can get individual desktops backgrounds for
each virtual desktop.
Well - i am used to a utility for M$-Windows called Xdesk that also
can set the the desktops to have individual icons / folders.
Is there any program that i can get to have different desktops-folders
or is there any way to trick either kde / gnome / idesk to have
If it is at all possible, I suspect it would involve editing /home/<username>/.kde/share/config/kdesktoprc. It contains stanzas for each desktop. But, I've not been able to find anything via www.google.com/linux which documents what parameters may be included in those stanzas vis a vis having different icons on each desktop.
The only workaround I can think of it to switch to each desktop in turn and open the applications you want in each, then leave them open when you shutdown. When you start up again, they should be started also (works that way in SuSE 9.3 Pro). I have mine set up to save the session, and resume the session on re-boot.
I too, would like to be able to do more individual desktop customizing. For instance, I like the idea of displaying all unmounted partitions as icons on a desktop, so that I know at a glance what is available. I also like to have my desktop clean & uncluttered. Unfortunately, I have so many partitions that these goals are mutually incompatible. Ideally, all but 1 would be clean & neat; and just 1, set aside for the purpose, would be filled w/ device icons.
I don't think this is possible in KDE 3.
Warning: What I say below is based on 3.3.2, not 3.5.x.
BTW, "Why would anyone want to do that?" is a direct quote from an MCSE student about having multiple desktops.
Yes, that how to use the KDE session Manager, but that is not the real thing.
What i want to have is for ex, a desktop - lets say i call it P2P and there i have my P2P apps, a DC-Client , a Bittorrent client and a Ftp-Client, and i have the icons to launch these each of these programs on that desktop folder and also i save my downloads as subfolders in that desktop.
Also i want to have, lets say - A desktop for Coding, and there i have ShoCuZ on the DesktopFolder for SciTe and BlowFish and RHide ... And on that Desktop i have Subfolders cantaining my different Coding project.
Well - for me that use fvwm with iDesk maybe i am close to a solution.
I am not so sure about my programming skills there, but i will have a peek at the code in a near future - but the KDE code is all to big to me, and also Gnome - And also i think i will go on use fvwm cause it so mucj more flexible..
Anyone intrested to get involved hack the idesk code.?.?
