vim, nvi, and making them work together...
A few days ago I tried editing a text file with nvi rather than the Linux default, vim. For me, vim has too many improvements. At any rate, because I had begun editing with vim, when I wrote the file to disk [ :w ] I got a surprise warning that I had truncated the file. I had been using 8-bit bytes rather that the older vi's version. I had removed the file~ to clean up the directory I was working and lost an hour's worth of work.
In my ~/.zshrc I have the LC_CTYPE [&c] set to something like us_US.UTS-8. Is this causing vim to use 8-bit mode. If I switch back to the ISO.8859-1 as my character default will that cause vim and and nvi to work interchangably? And how about the many new files I have written in 8-bit mode? I've hacked several things in C with vim and don't want to lose them! thanks in advance, you guys. |
ISO.8859-1 is 8 bit as well ASCII is 7-bit. AS much as I know nvi can't handle 8-bit characters. Take a look at elvis. It comes a vi clone on Slackware. It can do 8-bit characters. But test it yourself and don't take my word on it.
