Question videoconference and chat program multios?

I would like a simple program to make videoconfernce and chat without problems from linux (my debian) to a windows xp (at long distance).

I tried and I would like to avoid:
*amsn: unlucky supports of WLM protocol, many bugs and problems while staying invisible and/or with lag/timeout in video trasmission.
*mercury: really good protocl to WLM support, but it's really heavy about resources usage and it doesn't support my v4l webcam at all (JMF installed correctly).
*skype: really good image, but closed sources, and chat features poor...

I'm not asking a WLM client, could be another protocol, but it must support at least chat (wroten) and webcam on both windows/linux.

Looking in wikipedia there are many chat programs, maybe someone have tried all.

P.S: why people love so much videoconference and dislike to came back to Dalnet/iRC network?
