Update from openSUSE 11.0 to openSUSE 11.2
 

I have a new disk to update to openSUSE 11.2 but I don't remember how to start the process. I thought all I did last time was put the disk in and power up the computer. I have an ACER AST180-UD441A. My default boot is disk but it will not boot from disk.

When the computer is booting...hit the F12 key and it will give an option to boot from DVD.

You could use Yast2 and Online Update, which is in the software group. It could be that when booting with the newer version disk, 11.2, that it will detect an existing Suse installation and will allow you to update it.

Is that "new disk" a dvd/cd? and your "default boot is disk" do you mean dvd/cd here too?

If your pc won't boot from the suse dvd then try a known bootable dvd or cd to make sure that is possible. As falmdavis says, there should be an option when the suse dvd is booted to do an install-update as opposed to a new install.

Another way, if you have adsl and time to spare is with the pc online and your chosen suse repo for 11.2 already set, is to use a command line (preferably not a terminal window under the GUI) and type:

zypper dup

The disk is a DVD. The last time that I did an update like this, all I had to do was bring up the computer with the disk in the drive. Is there a control sequence that I can do that will make the computer boot from the DVD? I wish that I had the speed of DSL but trying to update online would be difficult.

Well, that is set in the BIOS setup of the pc. The entry mode varies among types. When you switch on a message may appear saying "hit DEL to enter setup" or "key F1 for setup". Maybe holding down the 'esc' key .

Sometimes there's a 'catch 22' because once in the BIOS setup there's an option perhaps to en/disable screen messages or have a quick/slow bootup so if you're not quick enough the entry time may pass.

Once in setup there should be a menu entry for boot order, then you 'save' the changes and the pc should automatically reboot.

I can only repeat that if you do get into the setup and ensure the dvd/cdrom is first then check with a different known bootable cd/dvd.
