Unable to login in linux desktop


Gud Mrng 2 all..

I am trying to login in linux with correct username & password but it show's the error "AUTHENTICATION FAILED".

Using single user mode,i am change the password and try it again but it will not work...

Pls share the solutions ASAP.

What is the distro you are using? Are you trying to login as root in GUI? Some distro doesn't allow graphical root login. You'll need to enable graphical root login then.

We are using Redhat linux desktop version 9...

In the same operating system working in some other system....

We are trying to login in GUI mode as a root user...

It shows the error like that....

Press Ctrl+Alt+F1, try login and see what happens.

we are try in command mode also....from ctrl+alt+f1 to ctrl+alt+f6....it's again asking username & password....

you do know that rh9 is WAY past it's end of life
there have been NO security fixes for it in many years - i think the last was in `07 on the extended life support ( 7+ year support contract)

it is very possible the system was cracked and the passwords were changed


try this
reboot but hit a key right before the system starts

edit the boot line in the grub.conf by hitting the "e" key
add a 1 # one to the end of the boot line
hit b to boot

that will put you into single user mode root only
from there you can change the user names and paswords
