udev hangs after installing OS

Hi, I have a system with 2 quad core processors and RAID 5. It used to work fine earlier with 6 disks in the RAID system but there were some hard disk issues and i now have only 4 disks in the RAID 5. After reinstalling the OS (CentOS 5.2), now the system refuses to come up and hangs at 'Starting udev'. I have tried all options (apc=off nousb etc. etc.) but to no avail. What can I do to even figure what the actual problem is? Is there a way to tell what's happening through log messages that causes this hang?

Thanks,
Ankur

I'm no expert, but what I'd do is booting from a live system CD / DVD and have a look at /var/log/messages.
