I agree with Cascade9.

An older PC with an Intel I845 video chip is unsuitable for running power hungry desktops like Unity, Gnome 3 and KDE 4.

In contrast; XFCE and LXDE are both far more efficient RAM wise and thus ideal for use on older PC's. You can install both from Synaptic.

Ubuntu problems

Just a thought...you mentioned Firefox.bin hogging your system. I've had problems with this in Ubuntu 10.04 LTS when I have installed Adobe Flash Plugin. The system slows somewhat and many times when I try to shut down it tells me Firefox.bin is not responding and I have to force a shutdown. Uninstalling the flash plug-in through Synaptics worked for this issue. Some of the basic flash player alternatives for Linux don't always seem to activate when installed so if I want to see a "flash" I have to reinstall the Adobe.

another possibility no one has mentioned yet. have you installed with wubi because wubi because wubi installs Ubuntu on the same partition as windows to my understanding and the wubi info sight warns it may slow down as time goes on, or something like that.
