ubuntu install, then blank screen on start up

I installed ubuntu on my p4 2ghz system with 512 ram and 120 hdd... it fully installs, but when it reboots, it goes through the grub then it goes blank. screen is on, but isnt loading, left alone for a good 20 minutes with NO results... any info would help...

OK, i fixed this issue, went into bios, switched to ONBOARD video... hit ESC between the system startup and the boot page... gave three options, clicked the first... and gave it a minute and it DID boot up, THEN gave the option to enable the pci hardware(nvidia 3d graphics card) also had the ethernet cable unplugged, read other threads that mention this as a SOMETIMES issue....
