Question Ubuntu freezes when trying to read a cd-r


We get data from people on dvd and cdr. We have an Emachine that has one dvd-cd combo drive. The machine will read and write dvds fine. If we put a cd-r into it ubuntu imediately turns the screen a scrambled white and freezes up the machine. A power cycle must be performed to fix it.
Any ideas?

It's an idea, not necessarily an answer. For me Ubuntu was freezing when I installed the last nvidia driver (180) the problem was resolved when I installed the preceding one (173). on another computer, the 180 worked.
This is mentioned but not described. Hope it will help !
