Ubuntu Desktop Font becomes "blocks"

The B and H characters on on my ubuntu desktop become a dark block, on the software menu, contain and the panel at the top too.

The attached image is from Thunderbird.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Very occasionally one particular program will quarrel with one particular font. I've just been looking into a similar problem experienced by another user. One font worked fine in applications, but in the desktop (e.g. Nautilus) the Latin 1 characters turned into Cyrillic! We checked his settings and the font, but there was no explanation. I once had a problem where OpenOffice couldn't handle "à" in one particular font.

So, does this still happen if you use a different font? If it doesn't, then there's just something funny about that font. The chances of finding out what, even with a font editor, are low, so pick another one.
