Ubuntu 8.04 64-bit display problems with a ATI HD 3870

I finally got Ubuntu working and everything, and now its showing most of the screen as black. Also the login screen is wayyy to big but I know how to fix that. the only part of the screen that is not black is the upper right conner and I have to do everything in there. Even installing the linux version of ATI catalist doesnt help. Could someone please help me?
