Ubuntu 13.10 upgrade to 14.04 failure - Advise please

I am using an e-Machines laptop with Win 7. Some time back I installed Ubuntu 13.04 then upgraded to 13.10 all as a duel boot. All was fine.

I decided to Upgrade Ubuntu to 14.04 last weekend. This was done on-line. All appeared to go well but, on reboot, I got an error:

udevadm trigger is not permitted while udev is unconfigured.

I have read a number of "solutions" and tried some but none go close to actually resolving my problem. If anyone can help I would be grateful.

PS - I really need to retain my Win 7 and, if possible, my /Home contents.

A fresh installation is always safer than an in-situ upgrade.

First make sure you do backups of your valuable data.

If you can boot 13.10 or 14.04 from a live CD or USB drive, select Try Ubuntu. Do not install it.

Open the file manager and then copy and paste the contents of your Ubuntu home directory to an external hard drive.

You should also backup backup your Windows documents, photos etc to the same drive.

Once all your documents etc are safely backed up, you can install 14.04 preferably using the Reinstall option, or alternatively choosing the Erase the existing 14.04 (or 13.10) and Reinstall option.

This should help you:

Thanks Habitual - this is what I did. Previous experience of using Upgrade ran without a hitch - until now :-(

Many thanks for the post and link anyway.
