Have you tried checking the checksum for the image when you downloaded just to check there were no errors while downloading and burning the image to disk? Also check with the 32bit version to see if everything is fine with your hardware. Drivers for your chipset or graphic card could be the thing. Also try out the LTS 10.04 version of Ubuntu to see if its distribution or the certain version thats giving you issues. Also try other distributions like Fedora and see if your hardware is supported out of the box.

May be you need to check your hardware with the HCL here at LQ as well. If there is something that is not supported or does not have proper drivers with linux, you will know. Graphic chips are culprits almost all the time and also wireless cards as well but those will not hang your system. You should be able to boot without having proper wireless drivers though you will not have wifi connectivity and those are fairly simple to diagnose and go without than graphic cards.

hi there,
one suggestion, probabally this will help. Make sure that you have not connected any external devices. There are some ways of booting (on the boot) which can help exp. safe mode and so on. Try that too.
BTW I think mepis is easier than ubuntu so try that first.
Hope this helps.

Somehow managed to boot live and install it . After that i've installed the AMD/ATI restricted drivers( my IGP is HD 4290) through the option available in the menu. That's it ....gone after reboot I got the splash screen of very low resolution and then suddenly "Out of frequency " on screen. What to do now????? My old system has nvidia card which is easy to setup, just by replacing "nv" with "nvidia" in xorg.conf. This new one has ATI onboard and I'm unable to find any appropriate help online.I didnt even took backup of the xorg.conf file before installing restricted drivers. Downloading the restricted drivers from the AMD site (that .run) & installing 'em will do any good? Please help i'm stuck here with blank screen ....

Thanks In Advance
